Dining out can be such a grand experience that it’s often the focal point of a night on the town. When asking someone about Saturday night plans, don’t be surprised if “We’re eating at so-and-so restaurant” is the only thing mentioned. Meeting with friends, having a few drinks, eating some award-winning cuisine in a chic environment — it sounds like a good time, so why not? With these high expectations in mind, remember that there are several factors that can make or break your night out at a restaurant. Keep these four things in mind when you want the best restaurant experience.
1. Reservations. Make the most of your reservation call. Reservationists (that’s right, it’s often a separate position) will ask if there are any considerations such as the type of table, location, or whether you’re celebrating a special occasion. Give them as much info as possible; the best restaurants respond accordingly.
2. Make a great entry. The first impression you make at a restaurant will set the tone for an entire evening. First of all, be on time. If you’re running late, call ahead so your table is held for you. Treat the hostess and bartenders with courtesy and don’t flash a quick temper. Restaurant staffs are very close-knit: if you make a bad impression, it will be returned to you in one way or another.
3. Timing is everything. Everyone knows that Saturday at 9 PM is the busiest time in restaurants around the world. Along with hurried service and plenty of noise, you’ll have food hurriedly cooked by a stressed-out chef. Be smart about your dinner hour. Nine o’clock on a Wednesday is much better, but if it must be Saturday night, make it around 7:00.
4. Finish with a flourish. Before sitting down, ask the hostess if your table is reserved after you. Tables have time blocks on busy nights. Try to get out before you have the awkward pressure coming from everyone who knows another party is waiting and growing testier by the minute. Of course, leave an appropriate tip. If you have gotten excellent service and you leave an average tip, you’ll probably receive average service the next time you show up. Make a smart investment.
